The Training of Catechists
The Education of Children and Adults

EDUCATION OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS
Face-to-face Tuition is given wherever possible. Catholic Catechist prepare children both individually and in parish groups for the Sacraments of Initiation, Confirmation, Holy Communion and Reconciliation. They also help with children’s liturgies in Parishes and nowadays in setting up Courses in Parishes to enable adults to renew their understanding of their Faith and to help with RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). They also prepare Sacramental Preparation Programmes for Adults in Parishes.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme has a Service Section, and in this area Catholic Catechist is responsible for the ‘Service through Religious Education (RC)’ at Silver and Gold levels.
Young Parish Helpers are now commonly used in Parishes, and they are those aged between 16 – 25 who are prepared to work with young children in their own Parish either in the Children’s Liturgy or as a trainee catechist in Parish Sacramental Programmes. The course guidelines are obtained through Catholic Catechist and the Helper works under the guidance of a local catechist.

DIPLOMA COURSE
THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS to give a comprehensive academic and practical training to men and women who wish to become fully competent catechists.
The Course consists of 24 work papers, which are worked at home, in the student’s own time and using books as required.
The Final Examination is worked under the same conditions as the previous papers at home in the student’s own time and using books as required, but it is assessed by an Independent Examiner. The Course also requires that a year’s practical teaching be completed to the satisfaction of the student’s Parish Priest and certified as such by him. The practical work may be done concurrently with the course.
The Course can be completed in two years, but full allowance is made for personal circumstances and family commitments. Students from many different walks of life can obtain this Diploma. What is required, however, is a love of the Faith, a desire to pass on their love and knowledge and an ability to undertake the study involved.
THE DIPLOMA
On successful completion of the course work and final examination, and on receipt of a certificate from the Parish Priest stating satisfaction with the practical teaching, the student is awarded the Diploma. This is recognised by the Hierarchy of England and Wales and is signed by the Bishop of the Diocese in which the student resides.
It will be appreciated that, as Catholic Catechist is responsible to the Hierarchy, the standard of the Course is high. It is under the general supervision of the Director of Studies.
CATHOLICISM MADE SIMPLE
The course has been prepared to help people who want to know more about the Catholic Faith, but who feel they do not know enough even to make a start.
This course is studied at home, at your own page, with the friendship and support of a tutor.
Each Chapter as a worksheet for you to fill in and send off to the tutor assigned to you.
You will be able to ask questions to your tutor about anything you feel you do not understand. You could also talk to your local priest about it if you want. The twenty chapters are arranged so that they build on one another to give a basic picture of Catholic teaching.
Each chapter of the Course is on both sides of a single A4 Sheet. The chapters are easy to read and information is sprinkled with humour as well as traditional facts about the Faith.
Worksheets are provided with questions and space for short answers to be sent to your tutor. There is also space for your own questions.
It is up to you how deeply you consider your responses and consider going on to other courses later. On completion of the Course a Certificate of Completion will be issued by Catholic Catechist signed by the Chairman and Registrar.
On being awarded, students become members of Catholic Catechist and are expected to offer their services to their Parish Priests. There is no subscription. A Newsletter is issued annually, free of charge to members, who are entitled to attend the Annual Conference and other meetings as arranged.
